Definition
An HRIS is the system of record for employee data: jobs, managers, locations, compensation, time off, and employment status, from hire to exit.
The HRIS holds the core employee record and the organizational structure around it. Downstream systems for payroll, benefits, recruiting, learning, and performance either live inside the HRIS suite or integrate with it. Its security model, which defines who may see and change which fields, is the reference for every other HR system.
For AI agents, the HRIS is both the primary data source and the primary permission model. An agent answering an employee's question about their PTO balance must read the HRIS as that employee; an agent proposing a payroll correction must respect the HRIS's approval workflow.
Meridian's agents connect to the HRIS through the Data Fabric and inherit its security model on every read.
