Zero-copy data sharing
Definition
Zero-copy data sharing lets a consumer query data in a provider's warehouse in place, with no extract or copy, so the provider's security policies still apply.
In zero-copy sharing, the provider grants the consumer access to specific tables or views inside the warehouse. The consumer's queries run against the provider's data where it lives. There is no export, no second copy, and no drift between copies. Row-level and column-level security defined by the provider apply to the consumer's queries.
For AI agents this removes a major objection. An agent that needs payroll or general ledger data does not need a copy of it; it needs governed query access. The warehouse remains the system of record, freshness is whatever the warehouse has, and revoking access is immediate.
Meridian's Data Fabric uses zero-copy sharing with Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery. For sources without a warehouse footprint, connectors load an Apache Iceberg lakehouse the customer owns.
