Definition
Data residency is the requirement that data be stored and processed within a specific geographic region to satisfy privacy law, regulation, or contract.
Residency requirements come from regulation (GDPR and national laws in the EU, sector rules in banking and healthcare), from customer contracts, and from internal policy. They apply to storage, to processing, and increasingly to AI inference: a model call that sends EU personal data to a US endpoint may breach a residency commitment even if the data is not stored there.
Meeting residency for AI agents means running the workspace, its storage, its processing, and its model inference within the region, and keeping zero-copy warehouse sources where they already are. Vendors should state the region per workspace and list subprocessors by region.
